The Beat Band ‘protest song’ chosen by Graeae for Reasons to be Cheerful tour

A song written by members of Club Soda’s The Beat Band, has been chosen by Graeae to feature on their online protest song hub. Footage of the song being performed live at Soda Beat earlier in the year, has been made into a lyric video to make it fully accessible for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences (see the video below). Gig Buddies Croydon

GigBuddies_Launch
Club Soda has been successful in raising funds to launch a Croydon version of the highly successful Brighton based Gig Buddies scheme.

The scheme will benefit people with learning disabilities and/or autism, pairing someone who has a learning disability with a volunteer buddy, to become friends and go to events together. The Gig Buddies project makes volunteering easier, by enabling volunteers to go to gigs and other events that they might already be going to, but they would now go with someone with a learning disability.

In 2016, Club Soda were chosen by the charity, Stay Up Late, who operate the original Gig Buddies scheme in Brighton, to become one of 10 national partners to launch their own local schemes across the UK. Club Soda will deliver Gig Buddies Croydon in partnership with Croydon Council’s Learning Disability Commissioning Team, who will help promote the use of person centred approaches by offering person centred training to all gig buddies.

Gig Buddies in Croydon is aimed at adults with learning disabilities
  • aged 18 years or over and who live at home with family, carers, or
  • who live on their own and find it difficult to get out and about

Priority will go to people who get little or no funded support.

A launch event featuring Soda Crew DJs will take place at Boxpark in September. For details on this and for more general information about the scheme, go to: www.gigbuddiescroydon.co.uk.

Royal Boil Alice present Echoes in Time

Earlier in the year, Club Soda was proudly commissioned by Drake Music as part of the Drake Music ‘Connect & Collaborate’ programme, to write and record an original piece of music inspired by the 1960’s architecture of London’s Southbank.

After several trips to the archives at the Southbank Centre, as well as numerous workshops and recording sessions, a ‘supergroup’ of musicians from various Club Soda bands (and especially named Royal Boil Alice for this project), wrote and recorded a site responsive piece of music called ‘Echoes in Time’. The following film captures the piece in all its glory.

New Pop Artists Exhibition, ‘Weft & Warp’ at Morden Hall Park

19 MAR – 16 APR // MORDEN HALL PARK, STABLE YARD GALLERY (FOLLOW SIGNS TO THE STABLE YARD)

EXHIBITION OPENING // SUN 19 MAR, 12-2PM

Turf Projects presents an exhibition by the Club Soda Pop Artists at Morden Hall Park’s Stable Yard Gallery. ‘Weft and Warp’ is a collaborative work inspired by the historical textiles industries that existed along the River Wandle, which were at their height in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The river provided power for the mills used in the production of calico, natural dyes and fabric printing. Some of the most celebrated textiles printers and manufacturers working along the Wandle were William Kilburn, William Morris and Arthur Liberty. The Club Soda Pop Artists have hand dyed calico with indigo, using the traditional Japanese technique of Arashi Shibori, which creates a pattern that resembles moving water. This has then been embellished with embroidery and printing using industrial objects.17310155_689040117933908_5558974619764632334_o

A Glimpse of What’s to Come – Live at the ICA on 17 March

A Glimpse of What’s to Come

‘A Glimpse of What’s to Come’, is the name of a new composition by Club Soda musicians. A response to a commission by Drake Music in association with Southbank Centre.

Club Soda’s composition has been inspired by the brutalist architectural style of the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank. The musicians have been influenced by some of the early concerts that were staged at the venue, notably that of Pink Floyd in 1967, David Bowie in 1969 and some of the early Radiophonic workshops that took place there. After spending time researching the archives and exploring the The Southbank, the musicians have recorded a special piece of music on the site itself. No postproduction was used on the recording in order to capture the pure atmosphere and the acoustics of the site, the reflections and the reverbs of the spaces.

‘A Glimpse of What’s to Come’, will be performed live at a special event taking place at the ICA on the 17th March, along with three other commissions by disabled musicians. It will be an evening of audio visual delight, performances, films, improvisation and installations featuring up and coming artists from across London.
